Winter Series Race #2 Results

On Sunday it was race #2 of the Winter Series. A total of 15 yachts participated, including three Coutas.

There is a (new) saying that “you don’t want to lead a handicap race until the last leg”. Element, helmed by Rob Slack, did that to perfection by overtaking Kama III, helmed by David Cunningham, just before the finish line. Panchax was travelling well through the fleet until she lost her course sheet overboard. After that she had to make sure there was someone to follow – and it wasn’t the Woody Point fleet which were taking Stokes to starboard! The worst case was, however, the fast starting Kulani, an East Coast 31 helmed by Noel Borel. She was so far ahead that most of the early boats assumed she had won the race. Most of the late starting boats didn’t see her. The mystery has, however, been solved. She arrived first at the Rocky Point mark, probably about 2-3 minutes ahead of Kama III. There was a boat anchored on the southern side of the mark as she approached and dropped her pole. One of the people on board the anchored boat hailed and asked if they wanted to shorten the race there, or do another lap. Noel was perplexed, and replied, that it was the call of the official. He asked twice more. Noel replied the same again. The official then said he was making the decision to shorten the race there and rang a bell as Kulani went around the mark. Assuming she had won the race, they went upwind, dropped headsail and motored back to their mooring at Taylors Point. After they had packed up the boat (and had a celebratory drink?) they saw Kama III rounding the Longnose Point mark. Noel dropped his mooring to undertake further inquiry with the boat still anchored at Rocky Point. The boat replied they had been finishing for the Woody Point Sailing Club! Thanks to Noel for that legendary story! Also, well done to Liberty, helmed by Ralf Moller, with a strong finish for 3rd place.

With respect to mark rounding directions we have contacted WPYC to request they review their Winter course to avoid the safety risk of yacht fleets rounding marks in different directions.

Sydney Harbour observations (Wedding Cake West) showed a breeze at 1-10kt with gusts of 3-12kt from the SW turning NNE. On Pittwater it was similarly light but more steady from the ENE/NE.
We raced the 7.8Nm course #16 – S, C, Rp, S, Lp, S
The race was handicapped for a 140 minute ‘slowboat’ time giving an expected finish time of 2:50pm. It was a bit slower, with a mid-fleet finish time of 3:22pm. That said, correct time results were similar.
