Avalon Series Final Race Results + Winter Series to start in April

Firstly, given the beautiful April weather is too good to waste, the Winter Series will now start on 29 April. The series will be held on the last Sunday of the month from April through to August (this amends the Mainsheet).

On Sunday it was the final race of the Avalon Series. A total of 9 yachts participated. The focus was on getting the race over and done so that we could all attend the Club Picnic and participate in the tug-of-war against BYRA! With the light conditions an unlisted short course was chosen, and then even that needed to be shortened. The first leg was to Rp. The early starters struggled in the very light conditions. Just getting over the start line proved difficult. Worse than that was being over the line early. Liberty was over early and with Diablo nearby she took about 8 minutes just to circle around to get back behind the line. A few breeze lines appeared on the right which Bangalla managed to find and use to advantage. Panchax was also moving well, although she was heading for the wrong mark! But at least she was moving. Laura held the early lead and charged back down Pittwater to the Rp mark. She needed to come in first to take the series title.

However, it was not to be. Bangalla was the first to round Rp, then an imaginary ‘T’ mark (which was missing), and then a shortened finish off Portuguese Beach. Despite her detour, Panchax worked back though the field to take out 2nd position. Diablo raced well to take out 3rd spot. That said, Jean will be less pleased with that Lizard which bit her foot at the BBQ. It was an eventful day, but all seemed to work out ok in the end, including a win to ASC in the tug-of-war (despite at one stage BYRA tying their end of the rope on to a log!!). Finish times are approximate as record keeping was minimal.

The series win went to Goldfinger, helmed by Jan Evans, on 8 points. Well done to Jan and David on a great season, including losing the ‘slowboat’ nomenclature. In second place was the team on Laura, helmed by David Boyd. They also had a great series, finishing tied on 8 points, but losing on countback. Third place in the series went to Diablo, helmed by Jean Cross, on 21 points.

Sydney Harbour observations (Wedding Cake West) showed a breeze of 1-9kt with gusts 4-11kt from the WSW turning to ENE. It was similarly light on Pittwater.
