Koolong and Blue Water Shield Race #1 Results

On Sunday, it was Race #1 of the Koolong and the Blue Water Shield. Ten yachts participated, with five in each race.

It was a day of firsts. As we dodged the westerlies last year, it is was the first time the westerly courses had been used. Yachts in the Koolong had to round 14 marks – surely a club record. For the Blue Water Shield it was the first time we had to lay the ‘H’ mark. I expect it took a while for the mark layers to work out those transits. It also took a bit of finding for the yachts as the afternoon progressed and the sun went lower in the west. We also faced the difficulty of the Koolong start line well set up for a westerly not working as well for the Blue Water Shield yachts heading north up Pittwater! A port, boat end start was favoured, making it a nervous start for all. In retrospect, it probably would have been best to put the Blue Water Shield into postponement and re-lay the start line. There are always learnings on the water!

Wimmera didn’t make it to the start line as she got caught in her boatbag. That made it four yachts in the Koolong. Resurgent took the early lead with a great first leg on the right. Resurgent suffered some spinnaker difficulties and Bangalla slowly worked her way into the race, taking the lead at the penultimate mark. That said, Resurgent, true to her name, grabbed back the lead to finish the scratch winner. With six head to wind legs there were plenty of opportunities to make gains, and Iluka, helmed by Di Mattes did the best, to take out 1st place on handicap.

In the Blue Water Shield, Chaos Theory and Chill fought out the scratch match. In the end, Chaos Theory, helmed by Karl Nielsen did enough to take out line honours. Handicap was also a close affair. Shibumi was welcomed back to the Club with a closely fought win over Beau Soleil. It was neck-and-neck at the finish, but Shibumi helmed by Simon Player just did enough.

Sydney Harbour observations (Wedding Cake West) were about 8-15kt with gusts of 13-25kt from the NW turning W. On Pittwater and in Broken Bay it was pretty similar.
