Retriever Race #6 Results

On Sunday it was Race #6 of the Retriever. Six yachts participated in the race.

Wimmera and Just Magic II got the best of the start and first leg to round the windward mark ahead of the fleet. In the lighter breeze Wimmera, helmed by Glenn Barnes, went to the eastern shore. That worked a treat. Just Magic II and most others went down the middle. Goldfinger with her spinnaker up was keeping pace, maybe even gaining against the some of the Etchells, until the wind got up around Soldiers Point and she decided it best to furl away her kite. Near the Palm Beach Pole, Bangalla picked up the strengthening southerly and hoped to carry it to the leaders, but by the leeward mark Wimmera had already a commanding lead. It was an impressive display from Wimmera. She continuedto get things right and she was the winner on scratch by a margin of just under 5 minutes. Resurgent tried valiantly. When only 2-up, she flew and gybed her kite in the pretty tough conditions to finish 2nd on scratch The winner on handicap was Goldfinger. That meant she took a trifecta with wins in races 4, 5, and 6. Well done.

In terms of the series, as the last race started there was only two points separating Wimmera, Goldfinger and Bangalla. A win or second would be good enough for Wimmera. With Goldfinger having a great race, Wimmera needed to sweat on the time of the final yacht, Stag. Stag needed to finish before 16:05:50 to take second spot, pushing Wimmera into 3rd. Instead, she finished at 16:06:49, which gave Wimmera the result she needed to take out the Retriever trophy. Well done to Glenn, Ian and Warwick on a great series!

Sydney Harbour observations (Wedding Cake West) were 15-23kt, with gusts 19-30kt, from the S. It was similar on Pittwater but with a lighter SSW wind at the start of the race.

We race the 11.3Nm S course #9 – Tp, K, Tp, N
