Information Desk

A place to store and pick up all the general information and leaflets about the club and its services.

For the 2018-19 season, Avalon Sailing Club are using a cloud-based, off-the-shelf rostering solution ‘DutyMan’ which is successfully used by many sailing clubs around the world (e.g. RPAYC).

DutyMan brings the following key benefits:

  • Simpler, more efficient management of the roster by the Roster Manager.
  • Ability for members to self-nominate, confirm and organise duty swaps on-line.
  • Ability for members to volunteer for duties to suit their own preferences and availability
  • Automated duty notification, reminders and up-to-date roster viewing/printing.
  • Smartphone views and iCal calendaring integration.

ASC believe that offering a self-rostering system is a significant benefit to members, but recognise that the success of the system is entirely reliant on members willing and enthusiastically self-nominating. By selecting early members will now have better control of times and dates that suit them. Without complete rosters, we will be unable to run our full and successful Sunday sailing programs and we ask for members' enthusiastic support of the system.

There are multiple links to the ASC Duty Guide which gives detailed information about the details and activities associated with the role. ASC enthusiastically supports our members exploring and developing new capabilities - perhaps some of our more seasoned members might like to use their experience in support of the Centreboard group and help the youngsters develop a similar love of sailing? Centreboard racing requires significant resourcing, so any help you could provide would be gratefully received!

Please note that if roster duties are unallocated as the duty date draws near, the Roster Manager will review and allocate out duties to members (with email notification) to ensure the sailing programs can proceed. Your support of any duty allocations allocated to you is also anticipated and appreciated.

The Avalon Sailing Club (ASC) is set in a magical location in the heart of Pittwater, with sweeping water views and a tranquil atmosphere. The clubhouse is an 'old style' wooden building given it a special ambiance and character. This has been taken advantage of with the recent use of the club for location filming, weddings and birthday parties.

Photos: Kingsley

The clubhouse is accessed via Hudson Parade with an upper entrance leading to an open upper floor with a covered outdoor balcony, male and female washrooms and a small kitchen area. Internal stairs lead through the lower level of the club (used for boat storage and not available for hire) to an expansive, open wooden deck. Water and electrical power are available on theupper and lower level. The deck has ramps leading to the north and south beaches, as well as a pontoon suitable for water access and the mooring of boats. Free public parking is available on Hudson Parade

This atmospheric location and venue is available for special events or weekly hire to groups such as Yoga, Pilates etc.

Since ASC is a lively and functioning sailing club, time slots are only available if they do not conflict with other club uses. For example, mid week and some evening slots are available, but typically Sundays (our main sailing day) are not.

If you are interested in hire of the club house, please give the contact below a call to discuss.

The Terms and Conditions of Hire can be found below, and will need to be read and accepted prior to hire.

FAQ's Adults and Yachts

Do the yachts Race?

Absolutely, we have up to 30 yachts regularly racing in the Pittwater area, courses are varied in length and style, generally racing is on Sunday afternoon but also friday twilight and occassionally saturday regattas, but we also have a cruising division ...

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) ... Children and Centreboards

I have small children and would love to get them out on the water. What facilities does ASC have for teaching children to sail?

We have been training young people to sail for many years now and have a team of young instructors plus dedicated people supported by enthusiastic parents in place at all times. In addition we employ a qualified coach and run a structured training program. There are three divisions in Junior sailing at ASC: Blue, Red and Gold Divisions. Blue is for absolute beginners, Red is intermediate and Gold is when these juniors start to race in inter club events.

Do I need special clothing or equipment for the training?

A life jacket, hat, shorts and longsleeve shirt is good. A wet suit even better. Plenty of sun screen and lots of enthusiasm. As you become more enthusiastic there are special items you might like to buy such as sailing gloves, boots etc but initially it's not wise to invest too much.

What can you tell me about your learn to sail camp?

These are run on an ad-hoc basis, usually during school holidays over summer and this is another way to introduce your child to sailing. The camp is both exciting and fun. The training itself is mindful that the students are novices and they are gently led towards becoming competent sailors.

What class centreboards does the Club race?

The Club races Manly Juniors, Open BIC's, Flying 11s, Spirals and Lasers. We also have as training boats Puffin Pacers and a fleet of Nippa's kindly donated by our patron Iain Murray.

Does the Club have dinghy storage facilities?

What social events does the Club hold?

These are many and varied. The fact is that the Club is as much about social activity as is about on water activities. Go to our photo library for a look at life at ASC.

I have noticed your duty roster. What is a duty?

ASC is run by it's membership. We do not have any paid staff. As a result it is club members who operate the canteen, start the races, run the rescue boats and in general make the Club buzz. This is all done on a roster system and each member is asked to do "duty" once a year at least.

How do I apply for membership?

Just download a form from this site, fill it in and send it to the address shown. Don't send any money we will contact you once membership is approved.
